I discovered my homemade dog food was not providing adequate nutrition for my girl, Bella. I searched the Internet until I found the answer I needed through the above link. I know that all dog foods are not created equal. They are not held to the same quality standard set out by the FDA for human consumption. These dog food companies use carefully crafted tactics designed by highly paid advertisement companies to convince you their brand, \"X\" is better than \"Y and Z\". Since we are so emotionally attached to our babies, their advertisement works every time. Buzz words such as \"highly digestible\" \"Omega-3 fatty acids\" along with \"Ultra Premium Formula\" You KNOW this has to be good for your baby. Wrong! I wanted something organic for my girl. Little did I know, organic can be labeled in three ways - 100% - 70% or less. All I knew was that organic was organic. Not! Lesson learned. \"Natural\" in dog food covers an even broader composition of questionable origin. Some of these by-products include slaughter house bones, blood, skins, animal fat, and intestinal organs. This is what goes into the commercial dog food - canned and dry. The two types of dog food: canned and dry or kibble are found at the grocery or pet store. The main ingredient in both is by-products. Dog food manufactures add artificial preservatives to lengthen shelf life. BHA or butylated hydroxyanisole and BHT or butylated hydroxytoluene, used as antioxidants, have been banned from human use in many countries. Not so in the U.S. These two chemicals have been linked to liver and kidney dysfunction in dogs. If that\'s not bad enough, the use of ethoxyquin as a preservative is labeled as a pesticide, yet is used in many pet food brands. This has been linked to stomach tumors, bladder cancer, skin conditions, organ failure and behavior problems. This is why I make my baby\'s dog food from scratch so I know she is receiving the highest quality, balanced, toxin free diet specifically for her size and breed. I make certain she receives the six basic nutrients: protein, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins and water. The system I am using has a general guideline for my Bella\'s caloric daily requirement. I was reminded that I need to take into account she is relatively inactive, a house dog, over five years old, and a continual snacker (where bits and pieces are provided by someone who shall be nameless). Bella is spayed and her hormones play a large part in control of caloric intake. So, I really have careful about that. Bella is not slowing down yet, but I learned I need to be aware of her vision and hearing, gait (stiffness), change in bowel or urinary behavior which may appear later in her life. I learned there is a list of \"no-no\'s for dogs. I was only aware of chocolate and onions which are dangerous for dogs. Poinsettias are deadly. There are many more \"no-no\'s\" we need to be aware of! I am perfecting homemade dog treats for Bella. She is crazy about her homemade dog food - beef and bacon - who wouldn\'t be. I\'m glad I have this manual so I can guarantee my furry baby will have a full and healthy life.
